Madonna Throws $1.5 million into Coconut Water Craze. Is It Really That Healthy?

Madonna recently invested $1.5 million in Vita Coco, a coconut water brand that is popping up on grocery and convenience store shelves all over the country. Demi Moore, Matthew McConaughey, and Anthony Kiedis of Red Hot Chili Peppers have also recently been seen consuming coconut water. The packaging claims that coconut water is healthy, will help you hydrate naturally, and “will change your life.” But are these claims true? The list of celebrities regularly drinking coconut water is growing. Chris Pine, Anna Paquin, Vampire Bill and Kara DioGuardi have been spotted drinking the stuff. During an Oscars after party this year, hosted at the home of Madonna’s manager, the music mogul served a coconut water cocktail called the Vita Coco Caipirinha to guests. Buzz ensued. Years ago when researching coconut water, I found that it is a naturally isotonic beverage, meaning it has the same electrolyte balance as our bodies. Electrolytes are essential minerals that are found in our bodies, such as potassium, sodium, chloride and bicarbonate.
